Where Are Data Located—and How Do We Collect Them?
Summary
In this section, we have delved deeper into where we can find data and how we collect it. We have seen that data exists everywhere, but there's no real point in trying to gather it haphazardly.
Therefore, we've taken a closer look at some common methods for collecting and aggregating data, such as APIs, using HTML tags and JavaScript to collect digital traces from websites, and sensors.
However, before using these methods and tools, you should know what kind of data you should be looking for and where to look – so you can more easily navigate and maintain a steady course out on the vast and confusing sea of data that exists.
That's why we've also examined ways to categorise data, and we've seen how we can distinguish between structured, unstructured, and semi-structured data, and a few specific examples of internal and external data.
In other words, there's no shortage of data sources. By now, you may have understood that you’re not free to use all data exactly as you wish. There are rules for how personal data and sensitive data should be handled.
In the next section, we're going to go through what data you are allowed to collect, and also become more familiar with the GDPR framework.
