Putting Our Data Knowledge Into Practice

In this chapter, we have talked a lot about how data can be used to extract insight and support decision-making. But this is only one side of how data is used to create value.

Data makes the wheels of a self-driving car spin, wind turbine blades in a fully automated energy park rotate and intelligent arm prostheses grip. All this without even touching a report or needing to be read by humans in a graph; this is data directly converted into motor action.

So when we say that data is “alive”, we can (almost) mean it in the literal sense.

Let’s raise our sights a bit and conclude our data journey by looking at how technologies such as automation, robotics, and digital twins exploit data.
